App design for Facebook NPE

Tuned App
Working with the New Products Experiments (NPE) team at Facebook, I contributed as the product designer of the app, Tuned.
The observations derived from across Facebook’s digital properties were that, for the average person, ~50% of messages go to one person and that person is relatively stable over time.
There was a gap in their portfolio for experiences for couples to feel close, and where existing couples apps face high competition to create new behaviour over and above common messaging apps.

User Relationships Data and Market Research
Over a two week period, we studied ~1.2B users to examine the correspondence with the person that they had the maximum communication with:
55% of total messages sent per user goes to one person
48% of users communicated with the same person more than twice in the two week period
48% of users were in close friends or in relationships
31% of the messages exchanged included an image
27% included reactions
17% included stickers
14% of messages were shared
7% included video messages
7% included voice messages

The hypothesis
A lightweight, playful way to share and respond to “thinking of you” moments will help couples feel close when they are not together, creating a daily destination for a user’s most important relationship.

The Targets
Audience:
College and post-college couples (aged 18-25) who don’t live together in Western markets.
Jobs to be done:
When I go about my day, but only have some spare time, help me:
Build joyful, intimate moments with my partner
Feel physically closer even if we are not
… so that I feel more connected and secure in my relationship.
Product principles:
Private and safe
Playful and expressive
Lightweight
Creates a sense of co-presence

The Experience
To create an experience to test the hypothesis and capture the product principles, I designed a simple framework:
The main screen displays a non-traditional feed, a tap away from content creation or customization, using a FAB to keep interactions lightweight. The feed is grouped by day and creates a collage of shared media when collapsed.
Stickers, comments and reactions are made on each piece of content to create a sense of co-presence.
Ancillary features such as shared music and moods help couples feel connected even when they are physically not.
Winning aspiration:
A daily destination for delightful, thoughtful moments between couples to feel close even when not together.
